The three-minute mistake

Suppose an event occurs at 10:00, but my system receives the report at 10:03. A historical query for 10:01 must exclude it. Sorting records by event time alone would put the report into the earlier view, making a decision appear better informed than it could have been.

I want Market Context Engine to help me inspect what was known around a market event. That requires preserving the system’s own information history alongside the events it describes. A timestamp on a headline is not enough.

Separate occurrence, receipt and availability

Source or event time describes when something happened or when its publisher says it was released. Received time records when the system first obtained it. Available time records when the relevant observation or published state became usable under its storage and publication contract. Those clocks answer different questions.

Receipt alone does not prove durable availability. A write can be delayed or fail. The implemented context contracts retain availability evidence, and the later Market State V2 publication path uses a receipt after commit to expose a complete state. A snapshot without that publication receipt stays invisible to historical readers.

Unknown source publication time remains unknown. Retrieving an old document today cannot make it evidence that my system possessed yesterday. If another research system consumes an export later, its actual receipt is a further boundary; export availability alone does not establish that consumer’s earlier knowledge.

Keep observations, select the historical view

Trusted Context stores append-only observations and preserves frozen pre-event expectations separately from later actuals. An as-of query applies an explicit historical cutoff to eligible records. It must not silently replace the earlier view with a newer fact or a later expectation.

Later checkpoints append observations rather than overwrite history. Explicit revision metadata is retained; a changed number alone does not prove an official revision. This matters when the first captured value was itself delayed: it cannot automatically be described as the original release vintage.

Market State V2 extends the approach with immutable snapshots and frozen input manifests that identify the evidence and policy used. Exact replay can then check the same inputs and historical boundaries, rather than rerun today’s collection and assume it reconstructs yesterday.

Repeated reports and absent sources

Three websites repeating one announcement are not three independent confirmations. The implemented provenance model groups known common origins and reposts. Additional independence requires explicit reviewed evidence; different domains alone do not establish it. Unqualified independence remains unknown.

An official source can also be delayed or unavailable. The system retains that limitation instead of inventing a release, expectation or actual. In the tested V2 outage behavior, affected context becomes stale while its retained condition and establishment time remain inspectable. Missing current support does not erase what was previously recorded.

Verification and limitations

The reviewed Trusted Context work implements durable history and historical selection. V2 qualification tested delayed information, duplicate imports, restart persistence, immutable history, publication failures and exact replay. Its evidence separates deterministic synthetic scenarios from replay of existing genuine local macroeconomic observations.

The Market State V2 research slice was qualified locally; that evidence does not establish V2 production activation or predictive accuracy. The separate MCE Linux collection service has its own operational evidence. Those tests do not establish new live-source coverage, complete historical knowledge or forecast accuracy. Reviewed source relationships also remain assertions requiring evidence, not an automated proof of independence.

My practical lesson is to ask when a record became usable before asking what it explains. A historical view is only credible if later knowledge stays out. Evidence basis: private Trusted Context architecture and runtime documentation, plus Market State V2 design and qualification reports; no private implementation artifacts are reproduced.
